Located off the northeast coast of Borneo, Maratua sits on the edge of the Derawan Archipelago in the Celebes Sea, within the Coral Triangle — the world’s most biologically rich marine region.
This island system offers a diverse underwater landscape, from steep reef walls and blue-water drop-offs to coral gardens and current-swept channels that attract schooling fish and reef predators.
Beyond Maratua, nearby islands add to the experience. Kakaban is home to its famous non-stinging jellyfish lake, while Sangalaki is known for manta ray encounters and important sea turtle nesting beaches
Diving the Derawan Islands
A Coral Triangle treasure with 50+ dive sites
The waters around Maratua form the heart of diving in the Derawan Islands, with a mix of current-swept channels, steep reef walls, and coral slopes.
Many dives take place along outer reef drop-offs where tidal currents attract schools of barracuda, jacks, trevally, reef sharks, and other pelagic life. Sites like The Channel, Big Fish Country, and Mid Reef are particularly known for schooling fish and large marine encounters.

Founder's Note
Hello, I am Nishi and I’m a SCUBA diver, freediver, and entrepreneur. I used to be a data scientist but the call of Mother Ocean is bigger than us all. Few key life events and hours of introspection led me to quit the corporate world and I found myself sitting on the beach with a life jacket (yes, I did not know how to swim back then)! Over the last few years I’ve been grateful to have the opportunity to launch and grow our Maldives vertical, Mad over Maldives. Me and my team are humbled by the love and support we’ve received from our wonderful customers. Oceaon is now expanding boundaries and I am elated to host you in iconic dive destinations across the world.
