The Destination
Similan & Surin Marine Park , Thailand
Located in the Andaman Sea off the west coast of Thailand, this destination is among the finest in South East Asia. Originally the Similans consisted of 9 islands and its name comes directly from the local Yawi language for ‘nine islands’. In 1998 the outlying islands of Koh Bon and Koh Tachai were added to the Similan Islands National Park. The Surin Islands is a chain of five islands that are part of Thailand's Mu Koh Surin National Park.
The islands are home to about 150 ethnic Moken people, who are nomadic sea dwellers known as "Chao Lay" or "Sea Gypsy".
Both archipelagoes are a part of Thailand Marine Park protected areas and stretch across 140 sq. km each, while over 75% of this is the ocean.
